How long does Botox last: How Long Does Botox Last?
Botox wrinkle effects generally last about 3–4 months and sometimes longer, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. That broad estimate is not a promise for a particular product or area. First onset, full effect, loss of a chosen improvement and return to baseline measure different stages.

How long does Botox last?

Dysport
Xeomin
- 1Dysport
The label describes reduced glabellar severity for up to four months. Individual duration varies; this is not an onset comparison.
- 2Xeomin
The label describes median onset within two to seven days and typical effect up to 12–16 weeks, with individual variation. Onset and duration are different endpoints.
Schematics explain muscles, product labels and study endpoints. They are not injection maps, individual dose plans, comparative potency scales or predicted results.
Duration needs a named endpoint
AAD says wrinkle effects last about 3–4 months and sometimes longer.
Exact product, treatment date, area and the change you notice.
First change, full effect, loss of a chosen improvement and return to baseline.
Use the estimate to frame a follow-up conversation rather than choosing an automatic next injection date. Mayo also gives a general 3–4-month estimate depending on the condition. Neither educational range makes every treatment sold as Botox the same product. Ask which brand was actually injected and which area the clinician is describing. Your definition of lasting matters too: retaining less movement is different from having no visible line while at rest. A study can continue to detect improvement after the effect no longer meets your preferred appearance. The family drawing puts label-specific time statements alongside each other without creating a comparative ranking. It is not a calendar of your predicted response. Keep a record of the injection date and the change you notice, then discuss that record with the treating clinician if the effect seems shorter or different than expected. An unexpected symptom needs assessment even while the cosmetic effect is still developing.
“What change are we timing, and what product- and area-specific duration should I discuss with you?”
Your answer
When does Botox start working?
Botox effects usually begin in 1–3 days, but full effects may take a week or more, according to Mayo Clinic. That is general education rather than a product-specific promise. A first sign of less movement does not mean the final appearance is already established.
First change and full effect are different
Effects usually begin in 1–3 days; full effects may take a week or more.
Ask for your office’s review plan.Xeomin label: median onset within two to seven days; typical effect up to 12–16 weeks with individual variation.
Do not transfer this timeline to Botox Cosmetic. The distinction matters when you are checking the mirror repeatedly or planning around an event. Ask the office when it expects to review your result and how to reach it sooner with a concern. The Xeomin label, for example, describes median onset within two to seven days and typical effect up to 12–16 weeks with individual variation. Those statements belong to Xeomin and cannot be relabeled as Botox Cosmetic deadlines. Likewise, the Dysport onset publication measures participants’ first noticed effects rather than full correction. An office’s review date is another milestone again; it need not be the day every line reaches its greatest change. If you have no record of the injected product, request it before comparing your experience with a label or a diary. Keep timing observations separate from symptoms: new swallowing, speech or breathing trouble calls for immediate medical attention, not another wait to see whether the appearance settles.
“When will you review my result, and which changes should prompt contact before that visit?”
Your answer
What does a Botox duration study actually measure?
A Botox duration study can measure movement lines, resting lines or a selected level of improvement, so its headline number needs the endpoint. Glogau’s 2012 glabellar meta-analysis found median durations of 120 days at maximum contraction and 131 days at repose among day-30 responders receiving 20 units.
Glogau 2012, kept in its own scope
Four glabellar trials; 621 onabotulinumtoxinA recipients of 20 units.
Duration medians are among day-30 responders.
120 days at maximum contraction; 131 days at repose.
Not a personal deadline or a direct comparison of all brands.
The analysis pooled four trials with 621 onabotulinumtoxinA recipients, rather than every current toxin brand or every cosmetic area. Conditioning the duration estimate on day-30 response means the median describes people who met that response definition. It cannot promise how long a person with little initial response will benefit. Maximum contraction also asks a different question from repose, which is the face at rest. The median divides the observed duration distribution; it does not set a date on which everyone loses the effect. These qualifications help you interpret a comparison without dismissing the evidence or overstating it. Ask your clinician whether a duration figure concerns keeping lines none or mild, maintaining an improvement grade or returning to the original severity. A number without that context is difficult to use for planning. Record the source and endpoint together when someone cites a study as a reason to choose a product.
“Does the duration figure describe selected responders, movement lines, resting lines or return to baseline?”
Your answer
Does Botox last the same in every area?
Botox duration evidence from frown-line treatment cannot establish a duration for every facial or neck area. Botox Cosmetic has separate labeled indications for glabellar, forehead and lateral canthal lines and platysma bands. Lip flip and masseter jaw slimming are outside its accessed cosmetic indications.
Botox Cosmetic labeled areas
Forehead · frown lines · crow’s feet · platysma bands
Outside those cosmetic indications
Lip flip · masseter slimming · gummy smile · prevention
- 1Botox Cosmetic labeled areas
The accessed adult label covers moderate to severe glabellar, lateral canthal and forehead lines, and platysma bands. This approval does not transfer to every toxin.
- 2Outside those cosmetic indications
Lip flip, masseter slimming, gummy smile and future-wrinkle prevention are outside the accessed Botox Cosmetic indications. “Baby Botox” alone does not establish label conformity.
Schematics explain muscles, product labels and study endpoints. They are not injection maps, individual dose plans, comparative potency scales or predicted results.
Name the site before using a duration estimate
Glabellar, forehead and lateral canthal lines; platysma bands.
Lip flip, masseter jaw slimming and gummy-smile treatment.
A frown-line duration result does not establish a lower-face maintenance or reversal schedule.
The label-area drawing is a way to identify what treatment you are actually asking about. A duration result for the corrugator and procerus region does not automatically predict lip movement or a change in jaw width. The supplied masseter review calls for larger randomized studies and does not establish a universal US cosmetic maintenance schedule. If the office uses the term baby Botox, ask it to specify the actual area, product, dose and technique; the marketing term alone does not determine label conformity or duration. Platysma-band approval is product-specific as well, so it should not be summarized as approval of every neck treatment by every toxin. Ask what endpoint supports the estimate for the proposed site and what remains uncertain. For lower-face goals, function and unwanted changes also deserve a separate discussion. The existing lower-face article covers that question without treating an upper-face duration estimate as a reversal timetable.
“Which evidence concerns my actual treatment area rather than another part of the face?”
Your answer
Will more Botox units make it last longer?
More Botox units cannot be assumed to produce a proportionately longer result or an appropriate treatment for you. Botox Cosmetic’s glabellar label regimen uses 20 Units, while Dysport’s uses 50 of its own Units. Their units are not interchangeable, and a larger numerical count is not a longevity comparison.

Schematics explain muscles, product labels and study endpoints. They are not injection maps, individual dose plans, comparative potency scales or predicted results.
A higher number can mean something different
Botox Cosmetic and Dysport use separate potency scales.
An investigational higher dose does not change the product label.
Return to baseline is different from keeping lines none or mild.
The product-by-product dose drawing shows labeled regimens for discussion, not an instruction to increase your dose. Some supplied research investigates Dysport doses above its labeled glabellar regimen; that does not change the approved dose. Its selected-responder duration endpoint is return to baseline or worse, which also differs from retaining none or mild lines. Dysport’s label reports increased eyelid-ptosis incidence at higher doses in clinical trials. A plan to chase duration therefore still needs a benefit and risk discussion with the treating clinician. If your previous result seemed short, first establish the actual product, areas and recorded units rather than assuming that adding more is the solution. Ask what outcome the clinician expects to change and what evidence supports that plan for the proposed regimen. Price should follow the agreed treatment scope, rather than a unit-bank balance deciding how much is injected.
“What evidence supports the proposed dose for my area, including the risks of using more?”

Your answer
Does another Botox brand last longer?
Another toxin’s study may report a longer duration endpoint, but that does not establish that it will last longer for you. Dysport’s label describes reduced glabellar severity for up to four months. Daxxify’s SAKURA trials report median none/mild glabellar-line durations of 24.0 and 23.9 weeks.
Separate product statements
Up to four months of reduced glabellar severity.
Typical effect up to 12–16 weeks, with individual variation.
Median none/mild glabellar-line duration 24.0 and 23.9 weeks; baseline-return timing is a separate result.
Those Daxxify results are study medians, not a promise for every person or every cosmetic area. The trials separately report time to return to baseline, which is longer than time retaining none or mild lines and must remain a separate endpoint. Their participants were predominantly female and White and received a treatment in the studied setting, limiting generalizability. The pooled SAKURA report does not add an independent new trial population to the original trials. Xeomin’s label supplies another distinct statement, typical effect up to 12–16 weeks with individual variation. You cannot turn these separate studies and label descriptions into a direct personal ranking without matching the regimen, population and endpoint. Ask the clinician to explain the source behind a longevity claim and whether the proposed treatment follows that product’s label. Compare the complete visit cost as well as the desired outcome, without assuming the longest published median means the lowest personal maintenance cost.
“Are you comparing the same duration endpoint and labeled area when you discuss another product?”
Your answer
Why does my Botox seem to wear off early?
A short or absent Botox result does not establish antibody resistance on its own. You need the actual product and regimen, the initial response and the endpoint you are calling worn off. Botox Cosmetic’s label says antibody incidence depends strongly on assay sensitivity and specificity.
My Botox duration record
Start by checking whether you had a clear initial change and what has now returned. Movement returning while resting lines remain softer is different from never noticing an effect. Bring the treatment record, dates and comparable observations to the office so the clinician can evaluate the concern. Changing the lighting, expression or other treatments makes an informal before-and-after harder to interpret; it does not diagnose what caused your experience. The supplied research does not establish a universal supplement, brand-rotation or treatment-break protocol that repairs poor response. Nor can a label’s antibody discussion settle whether your particular treatment was ineffective. Ask the clinician to distinguish the possibilities relevant to your case and explain what an assessment would involve. If the problem includes new symptoms such as a drooping lid or dry eye, contact the treating clinician promptly. For breathing, swallowing or speech difficulties, seek immediate medical attention rather than treating the problem as an ordinary duration question.
“Can we review the initial response and actual treatment record before attributing a short result to resistance?”
Your answer
Can Botox aftercare make it last longer?
The supplied aftercare guidance does not establish a routine that reliably extends Botox duration. AAD says to wait two hours before strenuous exercise; The Aesthetic Society says a surgeon may advise avoiding it for the rest of the day. These are attributed instructions, not a proven longevity formula.
Sources give different instructions
Wait two hours before strenuous activity; do not rub or massage injection areas.
Do not lie down for 2–4 hours; avoid rubbing or massage for 24 hours.
A surgeon may advise avoiding strenuous activity for the rest of the day; no universal hourly posture cutoff.
The timing differences continue for posture and touch. Mayo says not to lie down for 2–4 hours and to avoid rubbing or massage for 24 hours. Cleveland Clinic’s aftercare discussion uses a three-to-four-hour upright interval. The Aesthetic Society advises avoiding lying down or inversion without giving a universal hourly cutoff. Ask your own treating clinician to put the relevant instructions in writing and explain what to do if they differ from general internet advice. These sources should not be combined into a new rule that the research never tested. A patient’s impression that exercise shortened a result also cannot establish causation. If you forgot an instruction or rubbed an area, contact the office with the actual circumstances rather than assuming the treatment is ruined or adding more toxin. Do not stop or change prescribed medication to chase a longer effect; discuss all medicines and supplements with the prescriber and treating clinician.
“Which written aftercare instructions apply to my treatment, and what should I do if I cannot follow them?”
Your answer
When can I repeat Botox as it wears off?
Botox Cosmetic dosing more frequently than every 3 months has not been clinically evaluated, according to its label. Dysport’s glabellar label says retreatment should be no more frequent than every 3 months. Those statements do not choose your personal next treatment date.
My Botox follow-up plan
A review visit is also different from permission for more injections. Ask whether the clinician plans an assessment, additional treatment or a future maintenance discussion, and what each would cost. A reward earning interval or a prepaid-unit expiry date should not decide medical timing. Allē’s earnings cap is a program limit, not a recommendation to be treated that often. Tell the clinician about all recent botulinum toxin products, including treatment from another office, rather than assuming a different brand starts a new clock. If you want to stop or delay cosmetic treatment, ask what to expect for your particular goal without committing to a new visit. Budget decisions can wait for a clear clinical plan: a general duration range does not require a fixed yearly purchase. Seek immediate medical attention for breathing, swallowing or speech difficulties after treatment; do not wait for the product to wear off. Contact the treating clinician promptly about other unexpected changes and ask who handles concerns when the office is closed.
“Is this visit for assessment or more injections, and what supports the proposed timing across all my recent products?”

How we researched this answer
We used corrected product labels, the supplied society and hospital education, and endpoint-specific duration research checked in October 2026. Glogau’s 2012 analysis is abstract-level evidence, with responder selection retained. Patient questions shaped the distinction between movement returning, lines returning and a short result. The supplied voice corpus does not establish outcome rates or a maintenance schedule. No videos are rendered because the foundation playback IDs are not available.
How to use these sources
Product labels describe their own indications and regimens. Study results keep their population and endpoint. Practice advertisements describe their own prices and conditions. Ask the treating clinician for your plan.
