What is the difference between Botox and Dysport?

Botox Cosmetic and Dysport are different botulinum toxin products with noninterchangeable units and different cosmetic indications. Botox Cosmetic’s label includes adult frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet and platysma bands. Dysport’s cosmetic label covers moderate to severe glabellar frown lines in adults younger than 65.

  1. 1
    Botox Cosmetic labeled areas

The accessed adult label covers moderate to severe glabellar, lateral canthal and forehead lines, and platysma bands. This approval does not transfer to every toxin.

  2. 2
    Outside those cosmetic indications

Lip flip, masseter slimming, gummy smile and future-wrinkle prevention are outside the accessed Botox Cosmetic indications. “Baby Botox” alone does not establish label conformity.

Dysport

Other areas

Read each product’s indication separately; Botox Cosmetic’s approvals do not transfer to Dysport.

Both products temporarily reduce the activity involved in the wrinkles they treat, but the shared toxin category does not make their labels identical. Start the comparison with the exact area you want treated. For example, a clinician discussing Dysport for forehead lines is discussing use outside the accessed Dysport cosmetic indication, even though Botox Cosmetic has a forehead indication. Off-label status does not supply a dosing plan or establish which treatment suits you. Ask why the proposed brand and indication fit the goal you described. The illustration shows Botox Cosmetic’s labeled regions alongside off-label discussion regions; it is not a map of approvals for every toxin. It also cannot predict your appearance. If the office simply calls every toxin Botox, ask for the actual product name on the consent and treatment record. That name is needed to interpret the units, price and outcome at your next appointment.

Ask your clinician

“Which product and indication apply to the exact area I want treated?”

Your answer

How many Dysport units equal Botox units?

The Botox Cosmetic and Dysport labels do not authorize a universal unit conversion. Botox Cosmetic’s labeled glabellar regimen totals 20 of its Units; Dysport’s totals 50 of its own Units. Those different label counts do not establish an interchangeable dose ratio.

Dysport

No universal conversion follows from these label counts.

A practice may quote Dysport in native units or use a practice-defined equivalent billing scale. Ask it to identify the convention before you compare fees or repeat a treatment history. A billing scale is still distinct from the product label’s biological potency units. The drawing keeps the products in separate cards for this reason. You cannot infer that a higher numerical count means more treatment, greater strength, more injections or a better result. The labeled regimens refer to the specified indication and administration instructions, not an individual prescription for your face. Your treating clinician needs the actual brand and recorded units from an earlier visit if that history is relevant. If you only remember being told a total, request the record rather than translating it yourself. The same discipline matters when an office substitutes another toxin: ask what has changed in the actual plan and whether you have agreed to that product.

Ask your clinician

“Will you record the exact brand and its native product units separately from any billing convention?”

Your answer

Do Botox and Dysport treat the same wrinkles?

Botox Cosmetic and Dysport both have a glabellar frown-line indication, but Dysport’s accessed cosmetic label does not include all the areas on Botox Cosmetic’s label. Botox Cosmetic names corrugator and procerus activity for frown lines, frontalis activity for forehead lines and orbicularis oculi activity for crow’s feet.

123
  1. 1
    Forehead lines

The Botox Cosmetic label associates forehead lines with frontalis activity. Its forehead regimen includes glabellar treatment.

  2. 2
    Frown lines

The Botox Cosmetic label names corrugator and/or procerus activity behind glabellar lines.

  3. 3
    Crow’s feet

The Botox Cosmetic label associates lateral canthal lines with orbicularis oculi activity.

Schematics explain muscles, product labels and study endpoints. They are not injection maps, individual dose plans, comparative potency scales or predicted results.

Describe the movement you mean

Frowning

The Botox Cosmetic label names corrugator and/or procerus.

Raising the brows

Its forehead indication names frontalis.

Smiling around the eyes

Its lateral canthal indication names orbicularis oculi.

Those distinctions help you describe the concern before choosing a brand. A line seen while frowning, a forehead crease while raising the brows and a change in eyelid or brow position are not interchangeable goals. ASPS says injection planning depends on facial features and wrinkle extent. Ask the clinician to explain what is producing the feature you want to change and which part of it muscle treatment can address. This schematic shows the muscles named by the label, without marking a do-it-yourself injection pattern. It does not show how far a product spreads or predict that you will retain a particular expression. If you want less movement in an area while keeping another expression, say that in concrete terms. A brand name or the word natural alone cannot describe that preference. Bring questions about skin, brow position or lower-face shape back to the clinician rather than assuming every concern needs a different toxin.

Ask your clinician

“Which muscle activity explains my concern, and what would either product leave unchanged?”

Your answer

Does Dysport work faster than Botox?

The supplied evidence does not establish that Dysport always works faster than Botox Cosmetic. The Dysport onset publication measures participants’ first noticed effects, while Mayo’s general Botox education says effects usually begin in 1–3 days and full effects may take a week or more. Those are different kinds of observations.

Onset is not full effect

First noticed change

The Dysport onset publication uses participant-recorded first effects.

Ask which regimen and area were studied.
General Botox education

Mayo says effects usually begin in 1–3 days; full effects may take a week or more.

This is not a direct brand comparison.

A person noticing an early change is not the same endpoint as full correction or a clinician-and-patient response score. The Dysport publication also includes fixed and variable regimens, so its findings cannot supply a universal conversion or a promised deadline for you. Ask the office which product-specific endpoint supports its estimate and when it plans to assess your result. The absence of a visible change immediately after the visit does not by itself establish that the product failed. Nor does a rapid change in a diary prove a brand advantage, because the treatment area, dose, prior treatment and observation schedule may differ. If you have an upcoming event, discuss it before treatment and ask how the clinician handles an unexpected result. An early-effect estimate cannot promise that bruising, asymmetry or other unwanted effects will have resolved by your event.

Ask your clinician

“Are you describing first noticed movement change or the time you expect to assess the full result?”

Your answer

Does Dysport last longer than Botox?

The supplied duration evidence does not establish a universal longevity winner between Botox Cosmetic and Dysport. AAD gives general wrinkle-effect guidance of about 3–4 months, sometimes longer. Dysport’s label describes reduced glabellar severity for up to four months; neither statement promises your personal duration.

Keep each duration statement in its own scope

AAD

General wrinkle effects about 3–4 months, sometimes longer.

Dysport label

Reduced glabellar severity for up to four months.

Glogau 2012

Four Botox Cosmetic glabellar trials, 621 recipients of 20 units; day-30 responders had medians of 120 days at contraction and 131 days at repose.

An additional Botox Cosmetic duration analysis illustrates why study endpoints matter. Glogau’s 2012 meta-analysis pooled four glabellar trials with 621 recipients of 20 units. Among day-30 responders, median duration was 120 days at maximum contraction and 131 days at repose. That selected responder analysis is not a direct randomized comparison with Dysport, and a median does not describe every person. Keeping a line mild, retaining some improvement and returning to baseline are also different stopping points for a duration clock. Ask what you mean by wearing off: movement returning, lines becoming visible again or the original severity returning. Make that same observation at follow-up rather than comparing a friend’s satisfaction threshold with a study score. A prior personal experience can inform the discussion, but it cannot establish a rule for every brand or make an earlier repeat injection medically appropriate.

Ask your clinician

“Which duration endpoint supports your comparison, and what should I record as the effect fades?”

Your answer

Is Dysport cheaper than Botox?

Dysport is cheaper than Botox Cosmetic only if the complete comparable treatment quote costs less; a lower displayed unit fee cannot settle it. Advanced Wellness Aesthetics posts $5 per Dysport unit in the checked brand table. That Dysport fee is not comparable to a Botox Cosmetic unit fee without the product-specific plan.

The Advanced Wellness page is visibly dated June 2, 2026 and was checked October 17, 2026. The retained row says per Dysport unit as published, with no conversion applied; fee inclusions are not stated. This example teaches the billing distinction rather than advertising a predicted Dysport bill. Ask for the total native product units, the areas, any visit minimum and the cash-pay amount for each proposed option. Where an office uses equivalent-scale billing, ask for that convention in writing and keep it separate from the native units in your record. Reward eligibility can also differ. Allē and ASPIRE are separate programs, and ASPIRE’s terms require qualifying treatment consistent with FDA-approved indications and labeling. A forehead treatment outside Dysport’s accessed cosmetic indication should not come with an assumed ASPIRE benefit. Compare actual redeemable savings after eligibility is confirmed, rather than subtracting points that have not been issued.

Ask your clinician

“What are the complete comparable Botox Cosmetic and Dysport visit totals before optional rewards?”

Your answer

Are Botox and Dysport risks the same?

Botox Cosmetic and Dysport both carry boxed warnings about distant spread of toxin effect, but their safety details must be read product by product. Dysport specifically contraindicates treatment in people allergic to cow milk protein. That product-specific restriction cannot be assigned to every cosmetic toxin.

Before choosing a brand

Medical history

Discuss neuromuscular disease, medicines and prior toxin exposure with the clinician.

Product-specific allergy

Dysport has a cow-milk-protein allergy contraindication.

Urgent symptoms

Seek immediate medical attention for breathing, swallowing or speech difficulties after treatment.

Botox Cosmetic lists “Hypersensitivity to any botulinum toxin preparation or to any of the components in the formulation” and infection at the injection site. Dysport lists hypersensitivity to “any botulinum toxin product or excipients” and “cow’s milk protein,” plus “Infection at the proposed injection site(s).” Both warn about increased effects with pre-existing neuromuscular disorders. A warning is distinct from an entry in a formal contraindication list. The clinician should review your medical history, previous toxin exposure and interacting medicines, including aminoglycosides, against the exact proposed product. This comparison does not replace the complete prescribing information. The product trials also have different populations and regimens; their adverse-event rates cannot be directly compared to decide which brand is safer for you. Seek immediate medical attention for breathing, swallowing or speech difficulties after treatment, as the product safety instructions direct. Contact the treating clinician promptly about other unexpected changes, including drooping lids or dry-eye symptoms. Do not wait for a duration estimate to run out before seeking assessment. A price comparison should leave space for this medical discussion before you consent.

Ask your clinician

“Which contraindications, interactions and warning signs matter for my history and the proposed product?”

Your answer

How should I choose between Botox and Dysport?

Choose between Botox Cosmetic and Dysport through a discussion of the exact indication, your medical history, the proposed regimen and the complete price. The supplied comparative evidence does not support a brand ranking for every face. You can also decide to defer treatment if the plan or cost remains unclear.

A consultation worksheet, not a product ranking or dose recommendation.

The glabellar network meta-analysis compares several response definitions around a month after treatment. Its indirect rankings cannot tell an individual which brand will meet a particular expression goal. Its finding of no statistically significant adverse-event differences also does not prove identical risks. Ask what evidence would change the clinician’s recommendation for your area and why. If your last treatment seemed short or incomplete, bring its product name, date, areas and units; do not treat that history as an antibody diagnosis or a reason to rotate products on your own. Before agreeing, make sure the consent identifies the actual product and that the record will preserve it. Take home the office’s written aftercare and contact instructions. The worksheet turns a broad brand question into a concrete plan you can review, including the option of leaving without injections while you consider the answers.

Ask your clinician

“Why do you recommend this product for my indication, and what would make you choose differently?”

How we researched this answer

We compared the corrected Botox Cosmetic and Dysport labels, the supplied onset and duration evidence, and a retained practice price example. Sources were checked in October 2026. Patient questions shaped the focus on units, expression, price and a short result; accounts do not establish comparative effectiveness. Indirect rankings and cross-trial safety rates do not rank a product for an individual. No videos are rendered because the foundation playback IDs are not available.

How to use these sources

Product labels describe their own indications and regimens. Study results keep their population and endpoint. Practice advertisements describe their own prices and conditions. Ask the treating clinician for your plan.
