Your First Cosmetic Surgery Consultation

Not sure what to expect? Here's everything you need to know about your first consultation — whether it's in person or virtual.

A cosmetic surgery consultation is your chance to learn about the procedure, assess the surgeon, and decide if you're ready to move forward. It's not a commitment — it's a conversation. And the more prepared you are, the more you'll get out of it.

What Happens During a Consultation

What to Expect

A typical consultation includes:

1
Medical history review: The surgeon reviews your health background, medications, and any previous surgeries.
2
Physical evaluation: For in-person visits, the surgeon examines the treatment area and takes measurements or photos.
3
Goal discussion: You share what you want to achieve. Reference photos are very helpful here.
4
Procedure explanation: The surgeon explains the technique they'd recommend, including alternatives if applicable.
5
Risks and recovery: An honest discussion of potential complications, downtime, and the recovery timeline.
6
Quote and next steps: You receive a cost estimate and information about scheduling, pre-op requirements, and financing.

What to Bring

Be Prepared

Your consultation checklist

Photo ID and insurance card (even though most cosmetic procedures aren't covered)
List of current medications including supplements and vitamins
Relevant medical history previous surgeries, allergies, medical conditions
Reference photos examples of results you like (and don't like)
Written list of questions it's easy to forget in the moment
A trusted friend or family member a second perspective can be valuable

Virtual vs. In-Person Consultations

In-Person

Physical examination of the treatment area

30–60 minutes in the surgeon's office

May require travel and time off work

Consultation fee: $50–$250 (often credited toward surgery)

Best for: Finalizing your surgical plan

Virtual

Submit photos and goals from home

Receive a personalized video response

Review on your own time, share with family

Often free — no consultation fee

Best for: Initial assessment and narrowing choices

Many patients start with virtual consultations to compare 2–3 surgeons, then schedule an in-person visit with their top choice. This saves significant time and gives you more information to make your decision.

"A virtual consultation lets you hear from the surgeon on your terms — no sales pressure, no rushed office visit."

Questions to Ask Your Surgeon

Don't Forget to Ask

Essential questions for your consultation

How many times have you performed this specific procedure?
Can I see before & after photos of patients similar to me?
What technique do you recommend, and why?
What are the most common complications, and how do you handle them?
What does the full recovery timeline look like?
What is the all-in cost, including anesthesia, facility, and follow-ups?
What is your revision policy if I'm not satisfied?
How soon can the procedure be scheduled?

Red Flags During a Consultation

Walk away if you notice:

✕The surgeon pressures you to book immediately or offers time-limited discounts
✕They dismiss your concerns or rush through your questions
✕They promise guaranteed results or claim there are no risks
✕The quote seems too good to be true compared to other surgeons
✕You don't feel heard or comfortable during the conversation

A great surgeon will make you feel informed, not pressured. They'll encourage you to take your time, get a second opinion, and come back when you're ready. That confidence comes from knowing their work speaks for itself.
