Dr. David Kim

Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, MD

BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift) has historically been one of the higher-risk cosmetic procedures, but modern safety protocols have dramatically reduced complications. Here's what you should know: The primary risk is fat embolism from fat injected into large blood vessels near the gluteal muscles. Newer techniques inject fat ONLY into the subcutaneous (fat) layer, not into or under the muscle, which is much safer. ASPS and other organizations have published safety guidelines that qualified surgeons follow. Choose a board-certified plastic surgeon who performs high volumes and follows current safety protocols. Ask about their technique specifically. Done properly with modern techniques, BBL can be performed safely, but surgeon selection is critical.
